There is nothing as good as sitting on the beach, listening to the waves as you eat one of Britain’s best-loved dishes. Tucking into crispy battered cod and golden chips soaked in vinegar is synonymous with British summers, and there are lots of great places near our holiday cottages in Woolacombe that serve up delicious fish and chips. Take a look below to find which ones are our favourites: Squires, Braunton Award-winning Squires has people queuing out the door in the summer months – a sure sign they are well liked. Squires has been serving delicious fish and chips since 1969 and is said to be the no1 fish restaurant (we will let you decide!). Their chips are chunky, fish covered in a light batter and there is any number of accompaniments to choose from, including the classic mushy peas.

The Pelican, Barnstaple Voted the “Best Fish and Chip Restaurant” by the National Fish and Chip Awards 2018, you are guaranteed delicious fish and chips from The Pelican. They are passionate about the food, and support Turn the Tide on Overfishing as they choose wild-caught or farmed fish from sustainable and responsible fisheries. The Pelican has been awarded MSC Certification, the only fish and chip shop in North Devon. You can go for a takeaway, and there is seating inside too if you fancy dining in. Lynbay, Ilfracombe Lynbay in Ilfracombe has been serving delicious fish and chips since 1996, from local sources. The menu at Lynbay includes fish dishes, pasties, pies, rice dishes, burgers and more. With a family-focused welcome, the fish and chip shop is a favourite for many in Ilfracombe, as kids can enjoy iPads with games on, and there are high chairs and baby-changing facilities on site too. Lynbay also provides takeaway and delivery. Maddy’s, Ilfracombe Good food is a sure thing at Maddy’s and with their food cooked to order, you can always expect great fish and chips! The friendly staff and generous portions will mean you are sure to return when stopping in Ilfracombe. Many visitors have named it the best in the town due to the consistently high quality and reasonable prices. A children’s menu is also available.

Esplanade Fish Bar, Lynmouth The Esplanade Fish Bar boasts 25 years of experience, and their expertise shows in their delicious food. In addition to the fish and chips, you can get burgers, pies, pasties and jacket potatoes. Kid meals are also available, along with an assortment of extras such as curry sauce, gravy, mushy peas and baked beans. Hot and cold drinks are also available, along with some alcoholic beverages.

The Black and White, Combe Martin A traditional fish and chip shop in the coastal town of Combe Martin along the coast from Woolacombe, it has been family run for over 25 years and is a staple of the village. Black and White pride themselves on good service, 5* hygiene rating and biodegradable packaging and have used high-quality products from the same supplier since opening. The fish and chip shop is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday lunchtime 12-2pm and Monday to Saturday 5pm to 8.30pm. Woolacombe Fryer, Woolacombe Considered by locals and visitors alike to be some of the best fish and chips in North Devon, the Woolacombe Fryer on Barton Road is ideal for getting fish and chips for the beach. The potatoes for the chips are sourced from local North Devon farms and prepared fresh in the shop on the day. The cod and haddock served up are sourced from Icelandic seas, ensuring great quality.
